Black onyx, with its sleek and polished surface, has long been admired for its deep, enigmatic beauty. As the most used gemstone in our creations, black onyx brings a sense of sophistication and timeless elegance to our designs, perfectly reflecting Mongolia's culture, history, and traditions.
Historically, onyx has been a favored stone in various cultures, revered for its durability and striking appearance. This gemstone is a variety of chalcedony, formed through the layering of quartz and moganite, giving it its distinctive bands and smooth finish. The deep black color of onyx is often associated with strength, protection, and grounding.
The name “onyx” comes from the Greek word for “claw” or “fingernail,” referencing an ancient myth in which Cupid cut Venus' nails, and the clippings fell to earth, turning into stone. In Roman times, onyx was particularly revered for carving cameos and intaglios. Because of its layered structure, artists could create intricate relief designs with contrasting colors. It was also commonly used in seals, as the stone’s smooth texture and durability made it ideal for imprinting wax.
We choose black onyx not only for its visual appeal but also for its versatility in reflecting our artistic vision, making each creation both bold and refined.
To maintain the beauty of black onyx, it is important to care for it properly. Although onyx is relatively hard, ranking 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it can still be scratched or damaged by harder materials. We recommend storing creations with onyx in its BAIGAL jewelry box, away from other jewelry, to prevent scratches.
When cleaning black onyx, avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. Instead, gently wipe the stone with a soft, damp cloth, and dry it thoroughly to maintain its luster. Avoid exposing onyx to prolonged sunlight or extreme temperatures, as these can cause the stone to fade or crack.
